Penang Ideas Competition
Reprogramming Penang's existing infrastructures to create an equitable, resilient and people oriented city.
A peculiar obsession
A peculiar obsession
Penang seems to have an obsession with its historic street life. Old bicycles are plastered, painted and sold as part of Penang's heritage and culture.

Far from reality

Far from reality
A far cry from its historic roots, Penang's historic downtown has become a congested with vehicular traffic. There are more than 2 million vehicles driving in Penang's dense historic town.
Road dieting

Are there opportunities for us to reprogram the street in Penang to restore it's pedestrian oriented qualities?
Would we be able to give "road diets" to reduce the amount of driving lanes to increase the potential for pedestrian and cycling lanes?
Create new multimodal streets

Road diets on Burmah and Magazine Road
By changing the nature of these streets, we can create greener, multimodal arteries that can change the nature of the street and activate the ground plane more equitably.
How far can we go?
How far can we go?
By pushing road diets through entire streets in the city, we are able to create multimodal arteries that would be able to offload vehicular traffic with alternative transportation modes. What's more, with the welcome of the proposed LRT lines, these arteries would be able to connect the entire Georgetown with a 5-minute walk.

Starting with Komtar

A new "Green Octopus" starting at Komtar
With the convergence of Penang's 2030 masterplan LRT lines converging at Komtar, we see it as a hub in which new green spines can emanate. Akin to the once revolutionary "Octopus Bridge," this "Green Octopus" can bring about a different kind of connectivity to the heart of Penang.
Connecting through linear parks

Linear Parks Scattered through the city
Can we connect existing pedestrian infrastructure using a series of linear parks across the city?
Creating a Sponge City

Towards a Sponge City
These streets can be reprogrammed with Green Infrastructure, increasing the resilience of Penang towards potential future flooding.
More than just Penang's streets can be made equitable. How about its waste infrastructure and ports, even?
Jelutong Green Oasis

Jelutong Green Oasis.
Located at the end of Karpal Singh Drive, a well landscaped, soil-stabilized and odour neutralized landfill can quickly lend itself to becoming a park destination for families. With its elevation comes stunning views of the city and probably a powerful entrance point for visitors to Penang.
Port of Prai

Port of Prai
A final frontier in reclaiming the city for people, can the "Most Valuable" lands on the straits be used for living? With the addition of reclaimed land and the thought of moving the ports north of Butterworth, recapturing the ports for human habitation can revolutionize the story of Penang from a port city to a city made for people.
Perhaps the Penang of Tomorrow can be the most livable one.
